Booker plc and Tate & Lyle
plc, two major international food production and trading
companies with a combined history of over 400 years, merged their
agro-industrial and project management businesses in 1988 to create
a jointly owned company, Booker Tate Limited. In October
2004, Tsb Sugar acquired Booker Tate which is now a subsidiary of
Tsb Sugar International.
Based in Thame in the UK with a subsidiary, PT Booker Tate
Indonesia, based in Jakarta, Indonesia, the mainstream business of
Booker Tate is the provision of development, management and
technical services to the international sugar industry.
Although Booker Tate has provided services to a broad range
of agribusiness companies in the past, the present focus of its
activities is on sugar producing companies and this has been the
dominant activity in the company's substantial history.
Booker Tate employs over
50 permanent staff members, including a core of head
office-based specialists. The total establishment includes
project and corporate managers, agronomists, agricultural
engineers, irrigation and civil engineers, factory engineers
(mechanical, electrical, chemical and instrumentation), sugar
technologists, human resources and training specialists,
accountants, financial analysts, economists and information
technology specialists.
In addition, Booker Tate is able to
draw on a wide network of specialists throughout the sugarcane
producing world.
Booker Tate has recently worked in Angola, Belize, Bolivia,
Burkina Faso, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Guyana, Indonesia,
Jamaica, Kenya, Mozambique, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Saudi Arabia,
Sierra Leone, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Swaziland and
Uganda.
Recently, Booker Tate has been involved in:
- The operation of a number of technical, corporate, operational
and project management contract with sugar, ethanol and
agribusiness companies around the world:
- Taking responsibility for the agricultural development of one
of the first cane to ethanol projects in
Peru:
- Introducing modern sugarcane farming to Peru, including
mechanised planting and harvesting and the use of
GPS guidance to maintain physical aspects of soil
health
- Management of two of the world's largest sub-surface
drip irrigated sugarcane projects
- Project Managing the major expansion of two sugar
refineries, and continuing to provide project management
and engineering services to the largest sugar company in
the Middle East and to one of the largest sugar refineries in the
world
Booker Tate also continues to work elsewhere generating further
experience of developing and operating sugar and other agricultural
projects, including poultry, coffee and crocodiles, in a wide range
of agro-climatic, economic, social and political conditions around
the globe.
Tsb
Sugar , Booker Tate's parent company, produces around
600,000 tonnes of sugar per year at its three sugar mills in South
Africa.
